NATIONAL
YOUTH BAND

The need for a Band Club Association was felt as early as 1886 when there were already 18 established band clubs in Malta. However, it was only in 1948 when The Malta Band Clubs’ Association was formally set. In 1975 it changed its name to Għaqda Kazini tal-Banda.

Feeling that its members could no longer bear the financial burden of teaching young musicians for free, the Għaqda Kazini tal-Banda decided to set up The National Youth Band or Banda Nazzjonali taż-Żgħażagħ. The aim was to provide further musical education by both local and foreign teachers as well as giving young musicians the opportunity to share their experiences in conservatories and music schools abroad. The band is made up of young musicians coming from different band clubs around the islands. Their first concert took place on the 4th November 2017 at St. Paul’s Pro Cathedral to mark the feast of Santa Cecilia patron Saint of Musicians.

The National Youth Band marched through the streets of Mdina on Sunday 19th May 2019.
